Legislature will not take up same-sex 'marriage' during lame-duck session.
Marriage advocates launched a national campaign last week after the New Jersey Legislature introduced same-sex "marriage" legislation during its lame-duck session. People across the nation were urged to call New Jersey lawmakers and ask them to oppose the legislation and to support an amendment to protect traditional marriage.
The response was overwhelming, with as many as 200 phone calls an hour flooding lawmakers’ offices. Senate President Richard Codey now says the Legislature will not take up the bill during the lame-duck session.
"I think we nipped something in the bud,” Len Deo, president of the New Jersey Family Policy Council, told the The Star Ledger. His organization helped with the campaign.
The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) created radio ads that have been airing for a week, featuring children questioning the implications of same-sex “marriage.” Brian Brown, executive director of NOM, told Family News in Focus the ads will continue in order to put heat on legislators.
He said the clearest way to spread the message is by using the perspective of children: "It shows the confusion that changing the definition of marriage will wreak on our society."
