NEARLY a million immigrants in The Netherlands will be forced to take a citizenship exam in a bid to encourage them to integrate into Dutch life. Anyone who refuses risks a fine and being-, thrown out of the country. The exam Is a further sign that the-country, once famed for its open, multicultural society, is changing after the civil strife that erupted in .the wake of the May 2002 murder of right-wing politician Pim Fortuyn. He warned there were grave dangers in the mass immigration of Muslims into the once liberal country. Immigration Minister Rita Verdonk said the aim was for everybody who wanted to live for a long time in the Netherlands to have sufficient mastery of Dutch and "be able to participate in. society" Maud Bredero government spokesman on immigration, said: "We have migrants who can only say, 'Good morning' and there are women who send their men to the shops because they can't make themselves understood." It is estimated 800,000 people, including Muslim imams, will be forced to start taking the exams next year. |
