Politicians should be punished

At least 200 terrorist cells are being investigated in Britain amounting to 1600 individuals.
Could the people who created this situation be called traitors? Should they be apprehended and punished? What should the punishment be? Soldiers have been shot for cowardice; surely what these politicians have done is worse!
Shouldn't It be the duty of each generation to pass on this planet to their offspring in at least as good a condition as they found it or is this kind of thinking extreme and bigoted?
The link was taken from an Australian newspaper but refers to Great Britain - we are following in their footsteps and we have politicians here who need to answer for their crimes.
