04.02.2005 - 09:24 CET | By Honor Mahony
The Dutch government is planning to introduce exams for immigrants wanting to live in the country permanently.

Dutch immigration minister Rita Verdonk unveiled the plans on Thursday (3 February).

Under the plans, immigrants would be thoroughly tested on their knowledge of the Dutch language as well as their knowledge of the country generally, according to German daily Handelsblatt.

Ms Verdonk said that the exam, which would take place in the home countries of those applying to live in the Netherlands, would require around 350 hours of preparation.

The Dutch government will not provide any help with the exam but is intending to make available an information package costing 45 euro.

Taking the exam would cost 350 euro.
