You won't find this discussion in the American media -- it's a black listedsubject for a variety of reasons, most especially the power and retributionreputation of the extended Israeli/Jewish lobby coupled with the considerable influence it wields in many media organisations with other American Jews.

As one example, why has this important subject never been dealt with by the well-known 'News Hour' Program on Public Broadcasting, PBS? The answer is that long-time Executive Producer, Lester Crystal, himself a more 'liberal' American Jew, has prevented this subject from ever being discussed and rarely if ever allows any truly outspoken American Jewish critics of Israel to appear on that influential daily program.

Another example, CNN. There two of the big on-air stars, Wolf Blitzer and Larry King, both American Jews with deep Israel-connected roots, block discussion of this subject and never allow a serious debate about suspending the billions of dollars flowing to Israel yearly from the U.S.

This list of the top 50 neo-cons comes from a small Canadian Magazine,Adbusters, and it is actually just the beginning of this whole big important story. And yes, about half of the top 50 neo-cons are in fact Jewish, most with a long history of working overtime for right-wing extremist Israeli interests.

In fact the #3 man in the Defence Department, Paul Wolfowitz's deputy Doug Feith, was working for extremist Israeli causes while practicing law and waiting for power. Feith's former law partner now lives in Israel, represents the notorious settlers movement, and is making lots of money through his Feithconnections to the Iraq occupation. Furthermore, Feith has been the key manbehind both Paul Bremer and Ahmed Chalabi in Iraq.

Working through AIPAC and the lesser known JINSA (Jewish Institute for NationalSecurity Affairs) as well as a variety of PACs and sub-groups -- all of which in total make up the Israeli/Jewish lobby -- it's not happenstance that all these officials have so many key positions in the Bush/Cheney regime. Sometimes in fact what some call conspiracy theories turn out to be well-founded and are well worth factual examination.

But of course just as with other groups there are many people of Jewish background not at all associated with the neo-cons and in many cases aghast atwhat the Israelis are doing to the Palestinians. But these American Jews arenot organised in a way that can be heard and suffer badly from a lack ofleadership and courage. Thus both in public in the media, as well as operatingin the corridors of power in Washington, the Jewish Zionist neo-cons are today nearly completely dominant in official Washington. And what is called the'organised Jewish community' is today substantially dominated by the hard-line Zionists and neo-cons most of whom are closely associated with the Likud party in Israel -- the same political movement that Einstein and other prominent Jews publicly warned about back in 1948 as neo-fascist, racist, terrorist and chauvinist (read article) .

By way of full disclosure, the publisher of MER is Jewish and years ago was theWashington Representative of the World Jewish Congress. But those were different times and the WJC was then a very different organisation more aligned with the thinking of Einstein than that of Sharon. So it's a very complicated world; and one has to be very discriminating, very informed, and verythoughtful to really understand what is actually going on and why.

Why won't anyone say they are Jewish?

Friends help each other out. That’s why the US sends billions of dollars every year to Israel. In return, Israel advances US strategic interests in the MiddleEast. But despite this mutual back scratching, Israeli-American relations are enduring a rough patch. Last December, a senior State Department official blasted Israel for having “done too little for far too long” to resolve the conflict with its Palestinian neighbours. Indeed, President Bush himself had scolded Israel a month earlier with his demand that “Israel should freeze settlement construction, dismantle unauthorised outposts, end the daily humiliation of the Palestinian people and not prejudice final negotiations with the building of walls and fences.”

Harsh words, but is it all just window-dressing? This was not the first timeBush criticised Israel and he has made numerous calls for a “viable”Palestinian state during his presidency. Nevertheless, he has never concretely punished Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon for ignoring US directives and shrugging off his commitment to the peace process. It’s also worth noting thatdiplomatic admonitions are the responsibility of the State Department which has been on the losing end of the policy wars in Bush’s White House. One wonders what Israeli-American relations, and indeed what American relations with the rest of the world would look like if the neo-con hawks who control Rumsfeld’s Defence Department were also in charge at State.

A lot of ink has been spilled chronicling the pro-Israel leanings of American neo-cons and fact that a the disproportionate percentage of them are Jewish.Some commentators are worried that these individuals – labeled ‘Likudniks’ fo rtheir links to Israel’s right wing Likud party – do not distinguish enough between American and Israeli interests. For example, whose interests were they protecting in pushing for war in Iraq?

Drawing attention to the Jewishness of the neo-cons is a tricky game. Anyonewho does so can count on automatically being smeared as an anti-Semite. But the point is not that Jews (who make up less than 2 percent of the American population) have a monolithic perspective. Indeed, American Jews overwhelmingly vote Democrat and many of them disagree strongly with Ariel Sharon’s policies and Bush’s aggression in Iraq. The point is simply that the neo-cons seem tohave a special affinity for Israel that influences their political thinking andconsequently American foreign policy in the Middle East.

Here at Adbusters, we decided to tackle the issue head on and came up with a carefully researched list of who appear to be the 50 most influential neo-cons in the US (see above). Deciding exactly who is a neo-con is difficult since some neo-cons reject the term while others embrace it. Some shape policy from within the White House, while others are more peripheral, exacting influence indirectly as journalists, academics and think tank policy wonks. What they all share is the view that the US is a benevolent hyper power that must protect itself by reshaping the rest of the world into its morally superior image. Andhalf of the them are Jewish.
